Why Training Is So Important?
With so much focus placed upon the physical access to buildings and services since the implementation of Part III of the DDA in October 2004, it is important not to neglect the equally important areas of organisational culture, staff attitude and awareness.
Since 1996, it has been unlawful to treat disabled people less favourably for a reason relating to their disability.
Since 1999 service providers have been required to make reasonable adjustments for disabled people such as providing additional help or changing the way that a service is provided.
Ensuring that your staff have the knowledge and understanding to be able to provide a high level of service for disabled people is fundamental to meeting these legislative requirements.
In addition to this service providers cannot afford to ignore the estimated £40-50billion spending power that the disability market holds. The culture of an organisation or the attitude of staff is repeatedly listed as one of the biggest barriers preventing disabled people from participating.
